Heavy Duty RAM pickup increases towing capacity from previous model year |
The RAM trucks at Atlanta Commercial Trucks continue to lead the charge in the pickup truck segments as the recently announced 2016 RAM 3500 truck increases its maximum towing capacity by more than a half-ton from the previous year.
The 30,000-pound barrier has been cracked for RAM heavy duty, and the 2016 numbers work out to be 31,210 pounds of maximum towing. This allows the RAM 3500 to not only crush the competition but also provide the muscle that the Atlanta workforce needs.
How RAM accomplished this new feat
According to AutoBlog, RAM was capable of this statistic by increasing the number of bolts “on the rear-axle ring-gear hardware on versions equipped with the 11.8-inch rear axle, as well as by using a stronger differential-case material.”
Torque was increased on the legendary 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine which now tops out at 900 lb.-ft., also good enough for the best in the segment. RAM said a recalibrated fuel delivery setting along with the Cummins’ turbo boost settings helped the torque rise.
It’s not just towing that gives RAM the edge. The 2016 3500’s payload is measured at 7,390 pounds when the 6.4-L HEMI V8 sits under the hood.
